NAMARITH was born in Cambodia in 1945 into a large family of nine children. He spent a brief period studying at l’école des Beaux Arts de Phnom Penh. Later, at the expense of time with his family, he spent three years working with the great Cambodian painter who instructed DIM, a gifted artist working with Walt Disney from 1955 to 1963.
For Namarith, art is an interpretation of the world as seen and transfigured by the intelligence of the artist. “For certain young painters such as myself, the objective of art is not to create a figurative representation of the subject but to freely portray the image without reference to the outside world. Even before the abstract revolution, painters were trying to find the expressive meaning through abstraction but without realizing exactly what they were doing.”
“I like bad taste. Even in objects rejected by others, if we use observation, we can find amusing objects of bright colors that are majestic, vulgar, gentle or sad.”
“I have had the great fortune to meet certain great artists and painters, such as: Maitre Armand, Solange Bertrand, and Soson who died on 3 Dec. 2013. For me, I hold precious the advice that these artists gave me as I continue to explore my artist’s path.”
“Painting is not only a question of talent; a painter, above all, is a creator. Painting is equally the art of self-expression, something that no one has the right to question. After all, it is not the art that makes the artist but the artist who makes the art.”

NAMARITH est né au Cambodgien 1945, dans une grande famille de 9 enfants, il a fait une courte période à l’école des Beaux Arts de Phnom Penh. Puis, pendant 3 ans. Il a travaillé sans rien dire à sa famille avec le grand peintre Cambodgien, maître DIM qui a travaillé aux côtés de Walt Disney de 1955 à 1963.
Pour Namarith, l’art est une interprétation d’un monde transfiguré par le regard ou l’intelligence de l’artiste.
«Cette conquête du monde va être très brutalement remise en cause à l’époque contemporaine. Pour certains jeunes peintres comme moi, le but de l’art ne sera pas de représenter un sujet en étant figuratif mais de s’exprimer librement, sans référence au monde extérieur. Donc, de manière abstraite, bien avant cette révolution, des peintres ont fait de l’abstraction sans le savoir.»
« J’admire le mauvais goût que d’autres déplorent mais à force d’observation, on peut trouver des objets intéressants, avec des couleurs gaies, étonnantes, vulgaires, douces ou tristes. »
« J’ai eu beaucoup de chances de rencontrer quelques grands créateurs et peintres, comme Maitre Armand, Solange Bertrand, et Soson, qui nous a quitté le 3 décembre 2013. Pour ma part, je garde précieusement les conseils qu’ils m’ont donnés et je continue à tracer mon chemin. »
« La peinture n’est pas seulement une question de talent. Un peintre, avant tout, c’est un créateur : la peinture est l’expression de soi même que nul n’a le droit de juger.
Ce n’est pas l’œuvre qui fait l’artiste mais l’artiste qui crée l’œuvre. »
